Please help.......no Green wire on CDI box 00 Sportsman 500, new one has it.
#1
Hey guys.....new here , but a regular on a few truck forums. I am familiar with the search button and how to use it. I did find a world of knowledge here while browsing, but nothing that hit the nail on the head. Any help would be appreciated.
I recently bought a 2000 Sportsman, rode it all the first night, next morning it wouldn't start, no spark. Pulled black wire as told by the dealer, nothing. Put a coil in it, still nothing. Ordered a CDI box, got it, and it has a green wire that is apparantly for the earlier 2000 and it should go to the stator, but I have no green wire on my machine. My question is, did I just waste money on the wrong CDI that's not returnable, or can I make it work somehow? The dealer (aftermarket) said the next one they showed was a completely different style, like 1 insulated plug in for all wires. He needed my VIN to order this one, but it's still wrong. I'm now thinking (thanks to searching around here) that the problem is most likely located on the stator side, trigger coil, etc, but nonetheless, I'd like to get this CDI thing figured out first.
I'd prefer not to, but don't mind replacing stuff even if it's not the problem, peace of mind for the future or even for resale I suppose. Worst case, would a new stator with the green wire work if I run a single wire to feed the CDI? Pulse/trigger coil and stator are next on my list to look at, I guess I just started with what I thought was the obvious............that will teach me to act like I know what I'm doing, huh?
Thanks guys.

if you can post the year of the machine that the cdi is supposed to go on maybe somebody can look at wiring diagrams for you and figure out which wire you need to hook to.

Well, it's supposed to go on a 2000, that's the problem.......it is the wrong one. I read in another thread that late 2000 has no green wire. Everything else is plug and play.

Man, I thought this forum was chocked full of knowledge?!?!? Should I go elsewhere? Anybody in NW IN or nearby want to just fix it? I'll pay ya.

you have to understand, that not everyone or anyone will have all the answers to all the problems that come up im sorry to say. but we do our best as most of us are not full time polaris mechanics.

I do understand. I was kidding, just hoping it would stir up responses. I've got 3k posts on the DP. Someone asks a ?, it gets answered. I understand though, bigger forums=bigger variety of info.

Hello all who are regulars here, I am new to the forum.
I'm recently working on a 2000 Sportsman, I had the same trouble with the green wire.
I know this is an OLD post, but this is the only post I have been able to find out about the illusive green wire anywhere on the net .
green wire?
I was able to find this out ,& I thought I would share for the next guy pulling his hair out. I was not able to get anywhere with any Polaris parts dealers , or Polaris techs that I contacted.
The 2000 sportsman 500 Remington ed. I'm working on had some mice chew up the wires going to the cdi box.
The green wire , or 3 prong plug from the CDI to the Stator is Specific to a stator/magneto that has the green wire.
If you have a 2 prong plug with no green wire , you must use the same.
(found this out the hard way.)
The one with the green wire is the most common from 98-2000, so this is why you will find after market ones have the green wire.
"CAN I JUST CHANGE THE STATOR TO ONE WITH A GREEN WIRE?" you ask
NOPE, not according to Mike @ rickystator the only person I spoke with that even knew what the hell I was talking about.
I went on a Polaris parts site, I think Babbitts, or something .
It does list 2 different stators & CDI boxes for the 2000 model year, depending on serial # range.
I guess Polaris changed it mid production year in 2000.
I hope this helps someone out there in Intra-Web land that has the same issue.
I ended up digging out the rubber grommet & soldering new wires to the CDI to get it going, & back filled it with rtv.
Good luck all.
keep it greasy side down
