Default New to forum 99 Trail Blazer help

Hi I am new to the forum and the fun of ATV riding. I have an 08 Raptor which is tons of fun but the wife would prefer an automatic. Picked up an old 99 Trail blazer from her uncle that has been sitting outside for a few years to tinker with. I have some mechanical experience but not with 2 stroke engines. I am fairly certain I will need to clean/rebuild the carb and the top end. Other than flushing and replacing all fluids + greasing oiling everything I can find is there anything I should pay special attention to or look out for? If I get in over my head and need any serious rebuilding work done I live about 20 minutes away from Ritter Cycle Racing and he seems to have good reviews on this forum.

Thanks in advance for any help/recommendations

welcome. you cant go wrong w/ asking that man about 2 strokes for sure. yes you will need to clean the carb extremly well and the gas tank as well to get the old gas out and new fuel filter. i would do a compression test on the bike before you decide to tear it apart and if you have a good strong 100 =psi its fine to run. check the swing arm bushing to see if there worn out as well as the chain and sprokets. should be all set. if the clutches nned to be cleaned then worry about that after you get it running. good luck

Great! Thanks for the reply. I am waiting for my repair manual to come in before I really get started but I will pick up a compression tester on my way home from work.

Finally I did some compression tests and it is consistently around 110-115 or so psi which seems a little low. I rebuilt the carburetor (rebuild kit replaced all jets and seals), set it to the recommended settings. The engine turns over but does not start. It is dumping fuel into the air intake. I am not 100% on the hose placement with the exception of the fuel line. My digital camera failed be so i did not take pictures before I removed the hoses. I am using 40:1 premixed. The other thing is that it is quite noisy... almost clanky sounding since I turned it over using the electric starter/with a spark. I don't want to keep turning it over unless this is normal for a 2 stroke that has been sitting for awhile.

Thanks in advance.

I got it started!!!!!! The noise was just the starter. The problem turned out to be the new fuel filter being clogged. I replaced the lines, and flushed the tank but not through the petcock. Apparently there was enough crap in it to clog a filter. It seems to run pretty well all in all. Now all I need is a front master cylinder and to flush all fluids and clean it up real nice. I'd like to thank everyone on the forum. Its been a great source of information.
