07 Sportsman Water Pump Mechanical Seal problems
#1
I have been having trouble with antifreeze leaking from the weep hole on my 07 Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI so I purchased the seal pulling tool from Victor Specialty Tools and ordered a new seal from Babbits. The new seal does not look like what I have in the machine right now. The new seal has a hard clear plastic shell on it. Also, the instructions were not very clear on how to remove the seal with the tool. Has anyone done this before on this model?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Are you sure the pullers not for the 500? On the 700 and 800 I remove the stator and inner cover and knock the seal from the back side. I do have the installer tool which is a little different than the 500 installation tool (looks like a big socket with recessed area for the seal. The shell is to protect it as you install the seal, will pop off when seated, hopefully they gave you the right seal? Keep us posted OPT

I called Victor Specialty Tools to order the puller and they said that it should be the same. The puller that I got is OEM #2872105. Here is the link to Victor for the puller http://www.victorspecialtytools.com/atveng3.html#220205
The mechanical seal I got from Babbits and is SKU: 3610075
SEAL-WATERPUMP15X36/40X20,FACE.
The parts diagram all show the mechanical seal on the outside of the impeller which does not make sense either.
I had to take off the magneto outer cover in order to get the water pump housing cover off but I am not sure what you mean about knocking the seal out from the inside?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

When you pull the cover, on the backside you have access to seal and can just use a punch or whatever and drive out and then install new seal from the front. Be sure to replace cover gasket OR if still in good shape a little sealant will prevent leaks. Good luck

If I understand you right, I would pull the stator housing and the other side of the water pump. This would expose the oil pump correct? How difficult is it to pull the cover off? Do you slide the cover over the water pump shaft?
Also, my understanding was that the purpose of the Victor Specialty tool is that you do not have to crack open the case.
Thanks.

My shop manual shows to remove inner cover BEHIND stator, only a few bolts hold in,then pulls completely of of water pump shaft and crank and on the backside exposes seal, easy then to punch out seal and then install new seal. Be sure to either seal existing gasket if still good and not broken OR best to order a new one. You can use a good fitting socket to install seal.

Is there an oil seal behind the water pump mechanical seal?
Could you scan the page of your manual that shows the stator removal?
Thanks.

Yes there is an oil seal behind waterpump seal, just as easy to replace while you are there! You have to remove oil seal to get waterpump seal. Just pry out with seal remover and replace after waterpump seal is installed! Then reinstall cover. Once you take the stator away from the inner cover and remove cover, then everything is pretty self evident about replacing oil and waterpump seal! Good luck OPT

I've been looking in the repair manual and it shows to remove the stator housing you have to pull the flywheel with a flywheel puller as well as the bendix. I don't really want to crack the engine open and I don't have the flywheel puller. I have seen posts on removing the mechanical seal by screwing drywall screws into the seal and pulling it out with vise grips. The example I saw was on a 500. Has anyone done this on an 800?
