The Polaris Factory Manual has a list of the special tools needed for some/most jobs............

But when you said build a ATV from the ground up you will need Factory Manuals from every Brand,,,,..........Caper.............

Money, CNC Machine, lathe, Money, torches, saws, drill, Money, press, welder, tig, foundry,Money, workers, accountants, engineers. Oh and lots of money.

Just look at your machine, you need the basic tools like wreches, and sockets. You will need a couple bigger ones that don't normally come in a cheaper kit, that you could buy seperately. Torque Wrench is A MUST HAVE. Hex head sockets are worth the money I dont know off hand wich ones you need maybe a 6mm. Stock up the cabinets full of oil, and the liquids your machine requires. A stock of filters are nice to have. WD 40, PB Blaster, Pledge, Armor All are nice to have around also a box of rags. Air compressor, impact wrench, impact sockets. A tire changer would be nice to have if you have money to burn. Give your quad a look over and start a list of tools you need to work on it. More than likely you have a good many of them already and like Caper said a manual will tell you all the specialty tools you need.

There use to be an old saying "Give me a hammer and a 9/16" socket, and I can fix anything". LOL

Good luck with your list of tools.

You could spend an unthinkable amount of $. Depends on what you mean by building from the ground up. Are you talking assembling or fabricating? As far as the basic assembly stuff I concur with the other posts on getting a manual which will tell you the specialty tools you'll need. For the general stuff I would look on eBay. Lots of good deals on stuff(especially the larger size sockets/wrenches/ tool boxes). You'll get by reasonably on the normal wrenches, sockets, etc. Definitely will need a good torque wrench, breaker bar, compressor w/ air tools. Make sure the stuff is a good brand name like craftsman/snap-on/mac so you can return them for a replacement if something breaks. Also helps to have a good slide hammer, pullers, cv boot band pliers, large vise, drill press, hydraulic press(can get for around $100). The list goes on and on. You can NEVER have too many tools!
