Possible ECM problems and recall
#1
I had the ECM replaced on My 05 Sportsman 400 under the recall.I rode the machine last Sunday,Monday morning I went out to go for a ride, turned the switch on and nothing nada zip.I figured a dead battery,Put the charger on at 10 amps and after several minutes turned the switch on and had the dash guages etc. so i let it charge 4 to 5 hours removed the charger and nothing again when the switch was turned on.I thought bad battery{just replaced it last dec.}took the old battery in and exchanged it for a new one, filled it and let it set for 24 hours as described, refilled it to top it off,put it on the trickle charger for 3 days at one amp.Today I put the new battery in and still nothing.Battery shows 12.75 volts on the multimeter.
I am suspecting the new control module has crapped.I did a search and see where several other people have had this problem.
Now I would like to know,Has the dealer replaced the new defective module under a warranty type cirstumsance???
Thanks
MrMarty

caper is had 3 ecm's go on his bike all warrantied. can you start the bike w/ the pull cord, or jumping the solenoide? i know some of the issues were the ecm was draning the battery or having the fan come on. do you know what the ecm looks like they put back in? the new updated one looks nothing like the old one. just a thought to check it.

The ECM that is currently on the bike is the chrome looking one.I had read where the originals were black.
I did`nt try jumping the solenoid but I did try the pull rope and could`nt get a fire nor a pop out of it.
I did`nt test the old battery to see what the voltage was on it,I just suspected it was dead as the bike had been starting and running flawlessly until Monday morning when it seemed the battery was dead, put the charger on it then after a few minutes the info display on the dash worked when I turned the key on.I did`nt try to start it as I figured the battery was dead at that point and would need a bit more of a charge before it would have enough voltage built up before it would crank over sufficiently.

i beleave you do have the updated ecm by the sounds as that is the newer looking one. unless you have a dead short, it shouldnt be draining the battery unless it was junk to begin with. could start checking connections as well to make sure there corroded and put the dielectric grease to them and make sure grounds are good as well.

I am on my third one right now only two replaced......However the second one was the new silver one and the cooling fan was comming on overnight in the grage causing the battery to drain........So just because it a newer silver one,you just don't say O>K it's good...........Caper

Now then for an update:
I did`nt have the time to work on the electrics issue with the 400 so I took it to the dealer.
What they found:The ECM was full of water and it had corroded the terminals and who knows what other kind of damage the water had caused in there.
The guy working on the machine asked Me what I did to get water into the ECM.I told Him the only water that machine had seen was riding on Fort Peck lake on the ice after it had rained and snowed and no, the machine had never been submersed.I also told Him that if water had gotten into the ECM that it had better be a warranty item as there is no way that water or any other kind of moisture should have gotten into that box.
So now it is a time will tell situation.
FYI there has been three recalls on the ECMs and this is the third generation ECM,the big chromey looking one.

Thats interesting your dealer took apart that SEALED unit and found water. The new aluminum style even. I am really getting aggravated at these all in one modules now.
Shur power.
They can shut you down with no quick fix for the way out and they cost alot of money.
If they are going to the future they better do it right. LR modules never gave us this much trouble.
