i would a compression check. is it buring oil? maybe try checking th valves. w/ that many miles there shouldnt be to much wrong unless they put it under water. i would try to unhook the fan and run 12 volts to it to see if the fan it self works. imo

Agree with all said above, but the fan sensor on the lower portion of the radiator is a known problem in that era SP. Sensor dies, fan no longer kicks on, you overheat. Apply 12v to doublecheck the fan is ok... if it is, then 99.9% chance it's that sensor. also, if the fan is dead, you can order the OEM replacement direct from SPAL for a LOT less than buying through the dealer - same exact fan.

SPAL USA

For a 2000 SP500, the fan is SPAL pn# 30100452, or polaris pn# 2410123
SPAL USA
$79.45

Same part from Polaris (verified on Partsland.com) is #2410123 for $238.48

This was for my 2000 SP500... and when I pulled the old, OEM fan off the quad, it even had the SPAL sticker with the SPAL part number on it. It's the exact same fan, minus Polaris being the middle man.

According to Partsland, your 1999 SP500 uses a different fan. Polaris # 4170013 for $229.31. I'm not sure if that motor is also SPAL or not. You'd probably have to pull the fan off and check for OEM manufacturer and a pn.

This is the cooling system diagram for a 99 SP500. The fan switch is #6. Different pn and location than in 2000.
