Default 2000 Scrambler - Recoil....

Well, after about 15 surprise unwindings with the recoil spring, i figured out a way to get the spring in the housing, and get the pulley back in place....

However, the new rope that i bought came with the rubber pull handle molded into the end of the rope, and the directions in the manual were written for a rope with 2 open ends...

Question, how do I get the pre-load on the spring, if I have only one open end on the rope?

I have to feed the open end into the housing around the plastic pulley, then install the pulley, but there is not enough preload to pull the rope back in....

Thanks in advance...

You have to install rope through opening in case, feed into plastic reel BEFORE you seat the reel into the spring area! Then seat the reel into the spring area, turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE until you see the small slit in the reel, knotch the cord into the slit, pull up the excess rope and continue to turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE for about seven (7) turns.Slowly let the reel back up until knot in reel lines up with housing opening, while holding reel, pull rope from slit and let it slowly recoil back into case. Then should be finished! OR if reel is in and you are afraid of the spring coming back out, just turn reel until lines up with case opening, feed rope in and with a small pick or needle nose pliers pullup rope into reel and tie a knot,THEN turn to the slit and lock rope in and then turn reel counterclockwise as mentioned above. Good luck OPT

I'm not worried about the spring any more, I got that down.....

I am just having trouble getting the rope into the pulley, and with enough pre-load that the coil pulls the string back in when you have to use the pullstart.....

I guess I am just having trouble picturing how this is done with the handle molded into the rope.

I have done this countless times on a lawnmower, but again, you have the luxury of an open ended rope on both sides.

I'll give this a shot tonight..

Does the rope need shortened from the factory part that I bought from Polaris?

as long as it fits into the recoil w/ out sticking out over the holder slot it should be fine. imo

You DONT preload spring first! Just get open end of rope into reel, tie a knot, pullup extra rope until handle bottoms on case, turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE until you see the slit in the reel.LOCK rope coming from knot into slit, continue turning clockwise while holding up excess rope about 7 turns, slowly backup a little until you can release rope in slit and rope will pull into reel and handle will bottom out on case. When you have the rope locked into the slit and turning, you are not winding up the rope on the reel, only winding the spring, then when you release the rope from the slit and it aligns with the knot at the rope opening,it will pull the rope around the reel when you slowly let the reel go back from winding!
