Default Rear Axle Rebuild....No Chain Adjustment....

WOW, I guess I am never gonna get to ride this thing......I guess that's what you get for buying a 2000 Scrambler for $500!!!!

My whole brake bleeding issue aside, last night i got to at least power the quad up and down the back yard and the street.

Basically, this is the first time in almost a year, that I have had the thing actually running, it was not running when I bought it...

Now, the even LATEST issue, is I can hear "grinding" in the rear axle as it is spinning. It almost sounds like one of the bearing had come apart, and a roller is getting caught up in the spinning or the cage.....something...

ALSO, I cannot adjust the chain per the manuals instructions, by sticking a heay pin through the sprocket, I did loosen all the bolts, but the axle will not spin to adjust the chain, the wheels just drag.

Anything special, other than maybe a puller might be needed to remove the hubs???

i use a monkey wrench to grab the carrier and spin it till the chain is adjusted correctly. much easier than the pin method imo.

Large set of channel locks on carrier will turn it. You probably do have a bearing out if its grinding, hubs should come off without puller but sometimes they are stuck, someone must not have greased the carrier, they usually last if they are greased.

i wouldnt keep tring to ride it until you see if the bearings are bad to prevent more damage to the carrier. not sure on that one, but do you have to loosen the brake bolts as well as we did on the trail balzer we had besides the carrier bolt?

Yeah, I was planning on pulling the rear apart, just want to order all the parts first.....Anyone have advice on which pieces to replace, and which ones to re-use??

I did have all 4 bolts loosened...

Also, the manual says not to use a torch to heat the nuts on the axle, for the heat will affect the heat treating on the axle...

It seems these bolts will be very hard to remove.....

check the chain and sprockets too it might be your chain is just worn out and there 's no adjustment left and the carrier is turned into the stops and you can get the bearing at a bearing store cheaper than OEM but buy the factory seals

just my .02

a good point, so that is where you would turn it backwards to see if it will loosen more to make sure it is at the stops or just froze up. heat may be the last resort. can you put penetrating oil on them to let them set?

New chain, old sprockets....(chain was lying in the garage from my old SV650 racing days)..

Yeah, I couldn't get the thing to move either way, even with the chain off!!

I sprayed the penetratign oil on Sunday night and last night, and plan on working on the rear axle tonight....

To turn the carrier you only need to loosen 2 bolts, then turn the carrier not the axle. Unlees I'm reading something wrong here it sounds like he is trying to loosen the axle nuts.

No, I did not loosen any axle nuts to adjust the chain....

I just loosened the caliper bolts, and the 2 bolts at the end of the swingarm.

The clymer manual says to stick a pin through the sprocket, into the carrier, and this will lock the sprocket.

With the nuts loose, push the quad forward, or backward, and the carrier should spin in the swingarm....

I couldn't get any spinning, even with no chain......
