Question XP 850 Help...WARN RT30 Install

Hi All,

Began the install of my WARN RT30 winch last night. Got the winch mounted and secured...and all is good there.

My question comes with the contactor. The instructions suggest that the contactor face in towards the center of the machine, but unless I move the battery over 2 or 3 inches...that is just not going to happen. Is it ok to mount the contactor out towards the tire???

Plus...under the headlight pod is 2 wires. One is Red/Green and the other Orange/white. What are these for? Is one the key 'ON' power...for the winch handle-bar mount switch??? If so...which one???

Thanks for any help!!

Yes..I assume you see the stock contactor mount above and inboard of the left rear tire? It has the contactor facing out..I've had no trouble with it there yet. Yes there is a pig tail up front for the handlebar switch/power,I don't remember which one I used..but the wiring schematic says it is the red/grn..Also there is a a white(iirc) connector for the handlebar switch for contactor control..I assume you found that though. If not it should have a drk grn and black wire going to it according to the schematic..I keep referencing the info is from the schematic because frankly I don't have to much faith in the Polaris manual for the 850..

Thanks HO for the info!

I suppose I will mount the contactor facing out towards the tire and then use my liquid electrical tape to seal the connections.

Also appreciate the wiring info!

I broke mine off, but just zip-tied it back on. Has been fine since.

*** Update ***

Got the WARN RT30 all installed and tested. Works like a charm...but I did use the Orange/White wire. Actually...I tested both wires and they both supplied power when the key was 'ON' and the kill switch was in 'RUN'. Then I actually re-read the instructions that came with the winch mount and it recommended using the Orange/White. So...that is what I did.

The KFI winch mount is a good solid product, but was a bit of a pain to work with when the winch was installed. The reason was that there was no way to connect the blue and yellow wires to the winch with it mounted to the ATV. The WARN contact points are in close towards the wire spool...and the space between the winch contacts and the winch mount did not allow for the nut to be installed and tightened.

That was the toughest part of the install.

Default Did I miss something?

I just mounted a viper elite 3000 winch on my 850
and do not recall wiring into keyed switch power.
blue and yellow cable to winch in front, blue and yellow cable to contactor
in back near battery, and black and red cables from contactor to battery
posts.
everything seems to work correctly.
did I leave out something?

You may run your battery down, what did winch instructions say?. I believe the 850 comes pre wired for a winch, if you use the 850 wiring, it should aready be routed through the keyswitch.

What did you connect your handlebar switch too?

My WARN RT30 handlebar switch had three wires and two run to the contactor and just plug in. The third wire was 'Red' that connects to the 'Orange/White' wire under the headlight bezel. This is the wire that has power with the key 'ON' and the kill switch in the 'RUN' position.

All other connections appear correct.

Hope this helps...

I have not connected the handle bar switch at all.
if the wireless remote fails all I would have to do is plug in the handle bar switch cable
into the contactor and use it as a remote cable.

Oh ok. YES...then you did it all correct. Did not realize that your viper winch was wireless. Pretty cool feature!
