Default Oil Level

I did my first oil change Friday last week. 2 quart + little brought right to the full mark. Did about 50 miles this weekend checked the oil and now its running high. Never went through water higher than the running boards. Do I need to change oil again? Will it hurt to run a little high? if so can I use Mobil-1? What viscosity? 0w-50? Will that void the warrentee? Polaris is only one I see that actually sells 2w-50? seems like a scam, I can't believe they make there own oil.

You dont screw the dip stick in when checking oil. I run 0w-40 we have a 97 SP500 with 7500 miles and it had nothing but 0w-40 full sythetic since day one, Polaris OEM or Amsoil.

Excess oil should just blow into the air box if its is to high.

I've seen that mentioned but the 2009 sportsman manual says to fully insert. Did it change? When I first changed the oil I ran it around a little and warmed it up and oil was fine. Only after the trip did it go up.

How high above the "normal" zone is it?

Thats odd this Polaris mechanic on you tube says do not screw in the dip stick and the ATV looks to be a newer model. YouTube - Polaris ATV Maintenance & Repair Tips : How to Change the Oil on a Polaris ATV

about a quarter inch higher.

Yes I saw that video. When I got it it also was high when fully screwed in.

From the manual

1. Position the vehicle on a level
surface.
2. Access the oil dipstick and fill
tube from the left side of the
ATV.
3. Start the engine. Allow it to idle
for 20-30 seconds. Stop the
engine.
4. Remove the dipstick. Wipe it
dry with a clean cloth.
5. Reinstall the dipstick com-
pletely.
6. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. Maintain the oil level
in the safe range. Do not overfill.

I also switched to the Mobil 1 0W-40, but IMO you'll be fine just a little high, but I'd just spend the $15 on 2 quarts of Mobil 1 and fill it properly

The 09 XP manual says "fully insert and tighten" for oil level check. It also says 2Qt is the oil cap. You added a little extra, that explains the high level. When you pour in new oil it hangs for a while.

TLC, THAT mechanic is wrong! Dipstick must be screwed in all the way to properly check! Whether its the old metal tank or the plastic one! Thats why i say dont dump the full 2 quarts in at one time, about 1 3/4,run top off to full mark! When the sump on the 500 models is drained along with the tank completely, 2 quarts usually does it! Seems like on the 700 and 800's always takes a tad less than 2 quarts,on the 325 and 330 2 quarts usually on the nose.

2 quats should be the correct amount.........

I think the extra came from the cranckcase plug?
did you drain that from the engine....If not you now have 2-quarts plus the amount left in the bottom of the motor......Caper.........
