Will be buying a trailer on sat....have pretty much decided on a tandem 16' w/rear gate ramp.

..trying to decide if I will need trailer brakes.......would rather not have to install a brake controller in the truck.....the tow vehicle will be a tacoma sport double cab.....

What have your experiences been hauling two quads?

Brakes would be nice but not neccesary. Assuming an aluminum trailer and both ATV's I think you will be between 2000-3000 lbs. I know my setup, trailer weight and all with 2 loaded sportsmans is about 2300 lbs.

I already posted this pic and a few others on page 1 of this thread, old picture before I got the XP.

Personally I feel that is getting border line without brakes for the size of the vehicle. But I'm probably just paranoid. I pull mine with a 1/2 ton, I do have brakes for when I pull my Fish-House/Camperr/Toy-Hauler but when that is fully loaded it is around 6800 lbs which is about the max I would attempt with my truck.

What size tires? Mine has 13" but for not much more 14" would have been an option if I would of ordered one instead of taking a carry-over model. I wish I would have got the 14" although theres nothing wrong with my 13's. Also make sure you get a radial tire.

I would also pick-up a spare tire and make sure it has toe down locations where you want/need them. LED lighting is also a huge plus. I will be upgrading mine.

I bought an aluminum Triton 16x101 to haul up to 4 quads. Usually the 2 XP's and my kids 2 sport quads. Total estimated weight for all four quads is around 2700-2800 lbs. The Triton trailer is rated to carry 1995 lbs without brakes and 3400 lbs with brakes so that made my decision to get brakes. My 2500HD has an electronic brake controller but wanted to be able to use my wife's Tahoe on occasion so I went with surge brakes on the trailer. Slightly more money than electric but the flexibility seems to be worth it.

Would it have been cheaper to throw a $50 brake controller in the wifes tahoe? I always install them myself, takes about 5 minutes, they just plug in under the dash and all you have to do is find a screw to mount it to. I was tired of paying the dealer after i found out how easy it to do myself.

I know it is cheap and easy to do but I wanted the flexibility to haul it with anything be it one of my vehicles or a buddies truck.

The plan is to go pickup the trailer tomorrow morning, then pick up the quads, and I'll know pretty quick if it should have brakes. I work in a 'different side' of the trailer industry and can find cheap parts.......so i'll ad the brakes/controller if need be.

I have hauled a 3000+lb boat (just the boat) - and it was not much of a problem w/o brakes...and I have no idea what the trailer actually weighed.
