Default 400 sportsman battery removal

I'm trying to get to and remove my batter as i need to hook up lights to it. Of course the owners manual says..."remove Plastic guard on right wheel well, undo bolt at bottom right of battery bar and swing out of way...remove battery by lifting up through wheel well"

now obviously thats in theory cuz it aint comin outta there that way. for one theres the bracket and radiator hose but mainly a big black bar is in the way!

but i did notice that from the left front wheel well if i just undo the 3 bolts holding the plastic oil box/pan i could have access much easier. I have to change my oil anyway so.....

any experience input? whatever happened to lifying the seat off and opening a panel and wa-la,...there she is?
