Im looking at a 96 magnum 4x4 never had a polaris before. The owner says that it runs great about a half hour then it starts to run rough and backfires
also the exhaust gets very hot in fact it melted the side panel. any ideas is this one problem or two any one ever run into any thing like this. Also does this machine have points in it?

Exhaust melting the plastic is very common on that model. I put heat tape on the plastic and put a block between the plastic and the frame to push it out from the pipe another 1/2" and that fixed the problem. No points.

Mine runs pretty hot especially in the summer. Your leg gets pretty warm.

My main gripe with it is that it is chain drive. You're constantly having to screw around with the chain. You have to keep a close eye on the tension or you end up throwing it in a mud hole or something. That and while the rear chain is fairly simple to adjust the rest are a pain to access.

Other than that it's been a solid machine for me and I work mine to death.

Do yourself a favor and run away as fast as you can. It will develop an incurable disease. I have had the worst experience with the 425 Magnum, do some searches and you will find out for yourself. On the other hand, my 250 Trailblazer has been the best quad I have ever owned and would not trade it for any other, its a 1996 and never had any trouble to date.

stay away from it! though a decent machine they take a ton of mantinance to keep all the chains tight. plus the thing has problems you are not sure what they are. I bought mine and it had so much wrong with it ive rebuilt the whole darn thing.
