Default ATV Trailer

I got an elk hunt coming up in the Santa Fe National Forest and Pecos Wilderness and have to leave the truck behind. Be on the ATV for about a week and don't want to have to make multiple trips hauling gear from camp to truck (22 miles one way) on the Forest Service road. And what if (IF?), when I get an elk? Would it be ok to use this? Utility Trailer with 40in. x 48in. Bed | Trailers | Northern Tool + Equipment

It should be ok for the forest service road? I can put something down for a deck. Maybe some thin sheetmetal? Will I be able to find a receiver to fit the coupler size (1 7/8")? With the bed height at 16" the coupler should be a good match up to the ATV. AT only $200 do you consider this a relatively inexpensive solution or a waste of money? Any input you have to offer is greatly appreciated!

Those small trailers have tiny wheels. Might be OK for service roads, but I'd worry about sinking in if you hit mud. I would look for something with wider tires, maybe like northern tool item #2500905? Lots of places sell similar "offroad" trailers, so should be able to find something more in line with the price of the 40x48 trailer. Do you need the trailer to be highway-legal? That may force you into compromising on the tire size.

1 7/8 is a standard ball size, so should not be a problem to find at local trailer stores.

No idea on the decking, sorry.

Your right those wheels are small. Thanks for your input. As much as I like your selection I'm not gonna pay almost $500 (Includes s&h) for it. I don't need it to be street legal. I could get the same unit w/ 12" tires for $40 more.

19Tank,

Harbor Freight has a small trailer (37 3/8" x 51 1/2" ) with ATV type tires for $199.00. The trailer weighs 124 pounds and is rated for 1000. This trailer may fit your needs better. I think the ATV tires would handle the terrain much better. The deck size could be increased by using a sheet of plywood cut to size.

Where will you be hunting in Colorado? A friend and I were finally drawn for a high country rifle hunt after 8 years. We leave on Sept. 2 for two weeks of mule deer hunting west of Durango in the San Juan National Forrest La Plata Canyon. I can,t wait to ride the new XP 850 in the mountains.

Good luck with your hunt and trailer search.

Darin

Ya, those are cool. Nice price on the introductory model. I guess I'm gonna raise the amount I'll invest in this trailer. Like yours i should get one that will last, performs better with features for my future needs. Instead of an on-highway one. That I don't need.

I've got the one DVO50 mentioned in his post. I've used the tar out of mine and it hasn't missed a beat. I haul firewood, tools, rocks, sacks of concrete, feed, seed, dead deer and everything else with it. One heck of a trailer for the price. I ended up getting mine for 200 bucks shipped. I couldn't have built one for that.

That said I've been looking at this one from northern tool
Yukon Tracks Trail Warrior ATV Trailer — 4-Wheels, 1250-Lb. Capacity, Model# AV159 | Lawn + Garden Trailers | Northern Tool + Equipment

It looks pretty nice.
