Default Stator shot??

My machine is a 2000 expedition 425, yea its getting up there in age. Anyway the machine has always ran great until now. The thing puked out as I was riding the other day and wouldnt start back up. I havent been able to get any spark at all. At first I thought a bad coil, replaced that, no dice. To make a long story short, and being the expedition is a 5 speed shift model. I decided to try an pull start it in gear. Well, that worked, to a point. I got it to start up in 4th gear with a pull. And it will run as long as the throttle is at least 3/4th cracked, any less and it will instantly die. So I was thinking the machine has to be spinning at a high rpm for the stator to make enough spark to keep the machine running. Does this make sense, I have not pulled the stator, nor do I want to if I'm wrong in my figuring. Any other ideas on what it could be? Thanks.

Best to do stator resistance test, plus the older models had a habit of chunking pieces of flywheel magnets and screwing up the works! IF it is the stator AND you plan on keeping it,I would replace the flywheel also as its a matter of WHEN not IF the magnets fall apart! The old flywheel supercedes to a sealed unit,no more damage!

Now I'm really confused. If it isnt the stator, what else would cause the machine to run at high rpm's and not lower ones. Maybe I should have mentioned the battery is shot, but I dont think that matters at all, I have been pull starting it for some time now. And I've always heard the machine will run even with a dead battery, once started. My other guess was the CDI, but once the machine pull started I ruled that out.

your machine will run but will start to blow out electrical components..usually light bulbs first. your stator is putting out x amount of volts/amps. if there isnt a battery there to suck up the juice it gets put into the main electrical system...stuff thats supposed to run at 12.5v doesnt do very good when 15+ volts is getting pushed through it
