Default scrambler starter prob

I have a 02 scrambler 500. The starter and relay are brand new. Sometimes after turning the key to engauge the starter the starter keeps trying to crank the motor even when it's running .......The strange part to me is that when this is happening, i can turn the key off, the engine shuts down, but the starter keeps cranking even with the key and kill switch in the off position. Any ideas? thx -Ryan

Sounds like the bendix is binding and sticking against flywheel? Did you take off recoil cover to check it? Might need to be greased, plus check the bushings in the recoil and engine for damage(where the bendix rides) as they can cause a sticking bendix issue also IF ITS ACTUALLY the starter motor still engaging, could be a short in ignition switch or relay not disconnecting(new relay you said?) I'd check or replace the switch first as I've had a few bad ones that did the same thing! Good luck OPT

Thanks. i'm leaning toward the switch too, due to the fact that the starter keeps trying to start the quad even with the key in the off position and the engine not running, which makes me think it's not the bendix sticking.
