I'm hopinig someone out there is good with electrical and can help me out, my quad charges up to 16.1 volts on my voltage gauge when in diagonstic mode when I rev it up to 1500 -2000 rpm. I know this is not right, but could this cause sputtering/backfiring/bogging when trying to drive, and what could be the cause of the overcharging? Thanks.

I have the exact same problem with my 2002 sportsman 700, sometimes it will run awesome. And then occasionaly it will sputter and backfire usually around 20-30kph. It seems electrical because I had the carb rebuilt by a polaris dealer, and also it only happens occasionally which means the carb is most likely not the problem. If you figure this out let me know, it is driving me crazy and I'm affraid to take it out in the trails in case it decides to get worse.

Help please, I'm still having the same problem with my machine. While going thru the connections on the coil I came across a brown wire on the bottom of the coil (please see attached picture) which was not attached to anything, can anyone tell me where this wire is suppose to be attached to. From looking at the wiring diagram I've traced the other bottom brown wire to the stator and come to the conclusion that this one is suppose to go to a frame ground? But I can not find any wire anywhere to plug it into.

Any help would be appreciated.
1. I've cleaned my carb.
2. Gone thru and cleaned up all my electical connections.
3. Replaced the battery.
4. Found and repaired a sheared wire to the heat thermo unit that goes to the block, hot light goes on when grounding the thermo unit on the block.
5. Ran it without the thermostat, thinking it might be overheating, same thing, removed radiator and flushed and completely cleaned it, so I'm pretty sure it's not overheating.
6. Ran it without my air box lid on.
7. Tryed pulling choke, machine wanted to die which it should.
8. Checked air vent hose on gas tank.
9. Readjusted the throttle control on the throttle cable, gave it 1/16 inch play.
10. Checked the clutching.
11. Took cover for stator off, did visual inspection and all looked good.
12. Readjusted the vavles again.
13. Looked for any pinched fuel lines.
My machine will run good for the first 2-5 minutes, then bog and sputter until the electric fan kicks in for the first time (10 - 15 minutes), it still bogs and sputters while the fan is running and then like clock work after the fan kicks out for the first time the quad runs great and has full power until I switch it off again and let it cool down. What could this be?
Thanks.
