I just purchased an 02 SP 700 that does not have a winch, I do a lot of mudding and generally need to get winched out once each time riding. A buddy of mine has a SP 400 and his winch is mounted in front of his radiator on a mount, I have also seen pictures of Sportsman's with it mounted inside the upper grill (plastic piece must come out).

Any insight into the best mounting position and/or mounting hardware for this would be appreciated.

 

just get on ebay to find the mount plate, either warn or KFI make good ones, or whatever brand winch your gunna get

and do a simple google search for some bikes like yours with a winch

 

I know that somewhere I have seen an 02-04 sportsman with the winch mounted high in a spot on the plastic grill that is removable. I hate to pay and extra $90 for a mount plate.

I just put one on mine and it sits on a plate out infront. I was disappointed in the looks but function is in the right place. I can see the winch and when I wind the cable I can wind it even with no overlap and chance at crimping the cable. And up high will be better for the snowplow.
