Default Oil Preferencess

Hey guys, was looking for that post on Oil Brands and Mobil 1 products. There was a post buy a member on Farm and Fleet on the oil and NAPA on the filter. What I was looking for was the Oil filter for a '07 Polaris Sportsman 800 X2 and what viscosity to run on the Mobil 1, like 5W-40 or is it 0W-40? Thanks

A little history. There are Base 3 type oils (petroleum base), Base 4 oils and Base 5 oils. Base 4 (Mobil 1 0W-40) and Base 5 (Redline oils) are true synthetics. Base 3 oils are not. Anyway, Castrol began making motor oils that are a Base 3 type. They called these oils a true synthetic. Mobil sued them but the courts said they could call them anything they liked. The Petroleum Institute agreed.

So in order to compete with these oils that were cheaper to manufacture, Mobil changed their 30 weight oils to a Base 3.

I would only use 40 weight oils to be on the safe side. I can't imagine there is anything in the specific Polaris formulation that makes it the ONLY you could use.

I would use 0W-40 Mobil one and a Napa Gold (Wix) Filter, that's what I and many others use

Nope, and I don't believe Amsoil does, but I'm not sure on Amsoil, they have been running 0W-40 for a while now, IMO I wouldn't worry about it

I would use 0W-40 Mobil one and a Napa Gold (Wix) Filter. Been using it for years.
