as much as these machines cost they better fix it. Or tell em you're gonna contact the consumer protection office, that usually makes there ticker beat a little faster! Lol! Don't know where you live but in madison, WI the news channel has what they call 27 trouble shooter, and they take care of all of it. It's usually when people get the run around from a buisiness. The thought of bad publicity makes em change there tune! Lol!

Well I picked up my quad today. The axles are back ordered untill 9-11...Im heading out in the morning on a atv trip to the U.P. so i picked up my quad to take on the trip. They have both sides on order and will be covered under my extended warranty. They said everything will be replaced..The axles and cv joints. I thought the problem was just the axles. But maybe in just dumb and when people say axles they mean everything! Anyway I was glad to hear it will all be replaced.

I ran into this problem last week when I was going to pick up a used XP850 w/70 miles on it. Part is on order for me also for 9/8/09. This is the issue. When you are turning the axle, the ball is in the race of the inner race (star) and the outer race (cup or housing) and the ***** are constantly moving and being pushed, like a greased grape being squeezed between your fingers, and would have a tendency to shoot out. The cage is there to hold the ***** in place. Normally the windows in the cage are only about .001-.004" larger than the diameter of the ball, so they hold them in place very effectively.
For a couple months in 2008 the company that makes the axles for Polaris screwed up and made the windows a bit too large, so when the ball gets squeezed between the inner and outer race and shoots out, it hits the side of the race, causing a clicking sound at about 6 times per tire revolution (or close to that)
It should not cause any durability or strength problems, merely an annoyance factor. If it did cause a durability issue Polaris would have done a recall, but since it's not they didn't. I received this information from Big_T from another site.

Very good info! Thanks for explaining the specifics.
The part in bold is exactly what I thought.

Picked up the 550 from dealer yesterday...It is all fixed now. They replaced both axles. Nice and quiet again! Boy those axles are expensive! the original bill(which i recieved but did not have to pay as it was under warranty)was 720.00! each axle was listed at 315.00 each!! It did cost me 50.00. That is the deductable on my esc.
