I felt it was more that Yamaha was trying to get into the Popular 500 mid size class with the 450 Grizzly because all the had was a Kodiak 400 or a Big bore 660 Grizzly,they never had the mid size class covered.
Kawasaki is in the same boat,they offer a 366 Utility ATV or a Big Bore 650 they have no mid sized at all.
