Adding a K&N filter do I need to re-jet?
#3
Some say yes.... some say no. Personally, if your just putting a K&N into your stock airbox I say no, you should be able to adjust your airscrew to take care of the problem if it starts running lean. But if you are doing any mods to open the airbox up or adding a pipe, then yes. Just keep an eye on your plug after doing the mod and make sure it doesn't start running to lean.

I installed a K&N on my SP500 none HO and it made no noticeable difference at all. The carb has run a little rich from day one and it after installing the K&N it was still a little rich. No "seat of pants" improvement in performance ether. 2 strokes are effected a lot more than 4 strokes so you may see some changes.

I installed a K&N on both of my quads. It made quite a difference on my 2 stroke Sport, I didn't need to rejet. On my 4 stroke Kodiak, I noticed a little better throttle response. Either way, it's a lot better than the stock filter.

If your atv is jetted correctly for the temperature and altitude to start with you will "definitely" need to re-jet when adding a K&N. There are those who will say, no, that it's fine, but I'd be very suspect of that since each machine, altitude and temperature are different.
In fact, if your jetting is currently right, you will not even be able to run with the K&N without re-jetting. Too much air, too lean, hesitation. lean stall, etc.

Jack, you are absolutely right. You must however admit that there is a big difference between stock jetting and being correctly jetted. I believe if your jetting is stock, the K&N will bring it closer to being correct. The stock jetting is fat.

Plan on re-jetting.
Run the engine up to operating temp, run the quad around and do a plug check without letting it idle for more than a few seconds before turning the engine off. Change the filter. Install a new spark plug and test ride. Keep the old plug to compare with the new plug, and use it as a spare for later. Do the same plug check and compare the plugs.
Make your jetting changes from what the engine tells you.

Ok,
I to am going to put a K&N on very soon and have a couple of questions.
I live in NH. The tempature ranges from below zero to above 100. Will I see a benifit from the K&N?
What do I gain by re-jetting? Becasue of the cold, is my machine running properly right now?
Can I make adjustmets with the air adjustment screw and if so how should I do it?
If I do re jet my quad, is it something I can do my self?
Thanks
