Default XP Oil Filter Wrench

Anybody do an oil change (themself) on an XP ?

If so, what did you use for an oil filter wrench?

Where exactly is the filter on the xp's, could you use one that goes on the end for a ratchet, or would a strap wrench, or just filter pliers work?

Totally recessed under the skid plate. I've got 6 O/F wrenches & and only one comes close, a slip on, but wont fit the the small clearance between filter, frame, motor, & skid.

HA! I am not laughing at you...I am laughing with you! I just did mine today...and came to search on here for a place to get one...so I ran to Auto Zone and picked up a socket style wrench that is made by the "OEM" brand....it was size "F". Smallest one my place had. $6 and change I think is what I paid.

When putting it on the old one, I had to really push up firmly to get it to catch and grip to the existing filter and turn to get it loose. When putting the new on, it fit great! (By the way, I got the oil change for my my 550 XP from my dealership that had the full synthetic oil, Polaris brand filter, etc in it...)

On a side note...there is a full inch of clearance between the bottom of the filter and where it is even with the skid plate. The K&N Oil Filter # KN-303 is what appears to be an exact replica of the filter I just installed, but just a bit longer because of the nut on the end. I think I may go that route from now on....or not...I have the dang wrench that works now. Also...it will be 50 hours until the next change so I have some time to see if K&N comes up with a specific one for the 550/850 machines!

Just went to get it to make sure I get the numbers right...

OEM Company Oil Filter "F" Cap Wrench (25404) from Auto Zone

Searched Autozone's site... and found it here:
AutoZone.com | OilFilterWrench | 65to67mm.dia.oilfilter"F"capwrench

If that doesn't work, type in the model number 25404 and do a search - the on the right click on oil filter wrench

Yeah I got one that a socket wrench goes on as well. Works great. It was also the smallest one my auto parts store had. Not sure on the size though. The filter that comes stock on the 550 is a bit larger than the replacement filter. Mine said suburu on it. I believe it is because the engine is made by fuji ans they install a slightly different filter . When i bought my filter wrench I took the replacement filter(from the xp oil change kit) to the auto parts to get the correct size. Well when I got home it was to small for the filter that came stock. I had to be real carefull and use a hammer and screw driver to get the original off. But now it is simple when I change the oil. Just did it yesterday. Took 15 minutes tops..Hope this helps ya.

Glad I wasn't the only one that ran into that with the 550. I had also just changed the 850 filter and oil then I move to the 550 and what a pain with a different size on that original one.

I ran into the same problem on my 500 ho. The original filter was slightly larger then the replacement and the ratchet style wrench would not fit. It was a real fight getting it off and that isn't nearly as difficult as a place as the new xp filter location.
