Default Counter balancer Gear Timing

Polaris 400L Express:

I need to know if the center punch in the center of the counter balancer gear is for the timing in putting it with the counter balancer shaft which has a center punch on it. I can give pictures if needed. I need to know how to fit this together.

ANy help is GREATLY appreciated!

Both the punch marks on the counter balancer gear and the gear on the crank line up. Install the counter balancer first with the keeper plate and bolts and then align the punch mark on the opposite gear. Sometimes may take a couple tries, can get a tooth off one way or another. OPT

OPT is right on, make sure those dots line up on the counter balancer, or you will have problems for sure. Heard you can be one tooth off, but why?
