The first ride on my 850XP
#22
Roofer Yes I know. I have to wait for the law change in WI first. The DNR will overlook a XP that is stock. Wider wheels may attract attention. I do not want to give them a reason to pull me over. ;-) I plan on keeping the stock set as a back up for my yearly trip to Harlan KY. Those rocks can cut tires like a knife to butter.

Well, it looks like the bill is up for vote in the Senate today. Sounds good, just maybe be waiting on the Governor. Good luck!
Our bill was passed and put into law a few months ago which included the XP850 and AC950. I never had any problems, but I also don't drive like a fool and my machine doesn't really stick out of the crowd.

please forgive me guys for being nieve , but what laws are you referring to up north bound? Here in northern IN. there are no laws on atv's that I'm aware of other than registering them for road use and spark arrestors in state parks . Some buddys of mine have been talking about a 4 day weekend somewhere up that way. This info might save a few of us a ticket or worse.

The XP 550 7 850 are not legal on the trails in Wisconsin becasue of the 14" wheels. Here is a link from a prior post.

However the DNR tends to over look this issue with the XP as long as you are respectful to the trails, but there is no guarantee.

Would the DNR in your state be that savvy to know about the 14" tires? I could definately see if they were the 2-up machines and 3-wheelers that would be abit obvious.
I don't know are we now seeing the surge of ATV's becoming mainstream? In my area of the mid-atlantic we are limited in places to ride unlike up north and down south, midwest states etc. due to the over-populated dense area I live coupled with other issues but honestly I can't see a insurance company's informercial without mentioning coverage on motorcyle/boat and ATV's. Not only that but even the Pep Auto stores around carry scaled down cheapo's with the motor scooter merchandise.
Cheers,

Rtickward,
The problem is that on April 3rd 2009 the DNR revoked all 2009 XP registrations for the state of WI making it more advertised to the patrol officers than usual. Its not hard to spot the difference between a XP vs a SP.
I purchased a used XP knowing of this issue and will use my XP knowing that I may get a fine up to $186 for doing so even with a legal out of state WI trail pass on it. I can & would try to play dumb and say since I am "out of state" I did not know if I get pulled over, but I was informed by a DNR officer years back when we were pulled over for a check. It is our job as trail users to know the laws on Wisconsin trails.

Polaris can't be the only ATV's with stock 14" wheels, and besides you're running on tires not wheels. Tread design makes more of a difference than wheel diameter as far as tearing up land if that's what the problem is.
