500 ho cam ??????????
#1
have a 2001 500 ho with around 700 miles on it. was riding it the other day and all at once it started acting like it was running out of fuel and started missing under acceleration. it will start and idle fine but misses when reving it up. sounds just like when you put it in reverse and dont hit the override switch. a pretty reliable source checked that system out and said it was ok. he is leaning toward it being a bad cam. my question is: can a cam be out with only 700 miles on it???????? is there a quick way to check the cam out?? thanks, namvet

I would lean more towards the carb needs taken apart and cleaned real good, remove all jets and clean with carb cleaner and compressed air, sounds like pilot jet could be plugged, how old is the gas in it gas starts going bad in a couple months , maybe drain it and put fresh in.

I have 3000 miles on my 2001 now, The 500 did have the cam wear issue but i think it was more due to people trying to run the around the garage 10w-30 oils in the ATV. the cam is easy to check. see if the two rocker move the same,if one does not then it has a worn cam lobe, its always the exhaust lobe.
But with only 700miles I think its something else.
