Default 1996 magnum 425

Hi all,
Im new to this forum and have a question. my father in-law has a 1996 425 magnum. Its in the shop right now and is requiring 2500.00 worth of work because the transmission is shot!!! The quad only has 450 miles on it! Anyways, my friend says he believes he should have been squeezing the brake lever while shifting in and out of gear, his polaris requires you to do this. Does anyone here know if polaris recommends for shifting to squeeze the brake lever on a '96 magnum??
I have been trying to find the answer to this and have been coming up empty handed.
Thanks

You only shift from a complete stop. Has nothing to do with the brake!

I owned a '95 Magnum 425. In fact I bought it BRAND NEW! It was Polaris's first 4-stroke ATV and it was a good little ATV. In fact, I sold it to my brother and he still uses it today!

No tranny probs to date.

Thanks for the reply< my friends polaris (94 trailboss250) you are supposed to pull the brake lever to shift so we were thinking maybe his required the same procedure, and possibly caused the trans to poop out.
Thanks

holding the vrake lever would have nothing to do w/ the transmission at all. only a few years in the 2003 and up(not sure what years it was for sure) you had to pull the brake to get it out park and maybe gears, but it still shouldnt have anything to do w/ it unless he had the engine reved up or idled too high. but it would grind gears or shift into gear hard. but there again that still would not require any brakes. imo.

So you are saying for the trailboss (94) thats not a requirement either? I believe that my friend told him its says to do that in the owners manual?

it says to squeeze the brake so your not moving to shift as if you were rolling(like in a car or truck)you would be grinding the gears when you shift from say forward and reverse. but you dont have to use your brakes if your not moving to shift.

I see, thanks alot. Isnt it odd that a quad with only 400 miles would have major trans problems? Its a shame really, he only uses it for hunting driving back and forth to his stand. All light miles.

i would want to know what was bad in the transmission(like out of fluid, ground the teeth off the gears, broken chases) before i layed out that kind of money. he could pick up a used one aloot cheaper i would think. imo

Yeah i know, I was in the room when he was on the phone with the shop, very long list of broken parts. He has been looking for a used trans without any luck. 2500 to fix a 96 is rediculous but the fact that it only has 400 miles I think hes better off fixing it then scrapping it and buying someone elses problems. thanks again
