850XP Light & reverse override button & rear axle clicking
#1
Hello everyone,
I just finished my install of the Moose Heated Grips/Thumb warmer and they work great! Special thanks to Roofer for offering his great instructions!
Now I have an issue with my light & override reverse button. Both of them do not work. For some reason, it feels like something broke inside so I hope this is covered under warranty. I do have the extended two year contract so there shouldn't be an issue. Will the handle bar grip have to come off again? Hopefully not because I just installed the heated grips and from what I understand, would be a huge pain to take off.
Also, I noticed a clicking coming from the rear end today. It can be reproduced from going forward or reverse (when decelerating). I know there have been issues with the axles on these machines, but I'm hoping it's nothing to serious. If so, I would like those replaced under warranty as well.

Clicking is a axle issues yes. I had mine replaced after the warranty ended for free. As for the other issue are you sure you did not do something under the pod when wiring up your thumb/hand warmer since there are wires that run from the switch to the inner pod?

Hi Thor,
Yes I'm going to try and get the dealer to replace the axles for free. Can you tell me if there is a Polaris bulletin on this issue? If so, where can I find it so that I'm prepared for the dealer. I do have the extended contract so hopefully it won't be to much of an issue.
As for the switch, something definitly broke inside because the switch doesn't feel right. The dealer has already been contacted about this and it should be covered under warranty as well.

I do not know if there is a bulletin about it? I found out about it from a friend who traded his in for a RZR. The dealer who took it on trade told him there was something wrong with his when they test drove it. They had the axles replaced under his extended warranty. Many others have also had the issue.
When I purchased mine it only had 82 miles and was out of warranty for 5 months. Polaris took care of the issue for me at no cost.
This is what Big_T told me the issue was from another atv site.
"When you are turning the axle, the ball is in the race of the inner race (star) and the outer race (cup or housing) and the ***** are constantly moving and being pushed, like a greased grape being squeezed between your fingers, and would have a tendency to shoot out. The cage is there to hold the ***** in place. Normally the windows in the cage are only about .001-.004" larger than the diameter of the ball, so they hold them in place very effectively.
For a couple months in 2008 the company that makes the axles for Polaris screwed up and made the windows a bit too large, so when the ball gets squeezed between the inner and outer race and shoots out, it hits the side of the race, causing a clicking sound at about 6 times per tire revolution (or close to that)
It should not cause any durability or strength problems, merely an annoyance factor. If it did cause a durability issue Polaris would have done a recall, but since it's not they didn't."
Here's an exploded view of a basic CV joint:

Thank you Thor!
I'm going to be armed with this info when I speak to the dealer today. I already emailed them too so hopefully they can get they can fix it this week. Because right now, I'm not too happy with this machine.

I just called a dealer about the recall and my axles clicking. He said they have been replacing both rear axles. He could have them in three days. Will be getting mine fixed this weekend.
If you have the ESC for two years, have your VIN # on hand when you call.

My dealer is closed today so I will be calling them first thing on Tuesday. Hopefully there will be no issues replacing these axles. I have the VIN # too and my extended contract. They also need to replace my light switch as well.
Please let us know how you make out at the dealer.

Hi MR Thor,
Would you mind providing me with your dealers name and a contact there in regards to the rear axle? I asked Roofer for the same information because I'd like to be prepared to speak with the dealer, and have valid cases in front of me so that my dealer will take immediate note of the issue.
Thanks again.

Update, the dealer is going to replace the rear axles, control switch & because of the reported issues with them, they are also replacing the front ball joints (even though mine are in good shape) under warranty.
The control switch will be in the middle of November but the other parts will be in by the end of the week.
I hope this is the end of these issues because I paid some good money for this machine, and would be highly disappointed if something else breaks.
