well polaris does have a 700 twin four-stroke out. GO to polarisindustries.com and they have a article on the new four-stroke sled.
it says the engine is build at the wisconsin engine plant, it has EFI, and is 48hp.

anybody want to wager that that is the engine that will be put in the sportsman??
wouldent u all love a 48hp twin with EFI???

p.s. when u go to polaris website theres a pop-up that comes up and says there a big announcement on the 1st of march. it think its for a sled but not sure.

Dream on ... @ 730 lbs, it's still a slug.

In case you didn't know, that engine has been around for over a year in testing by the Forest Service sleds.

If you want a performance machine go buy a DS 650, it's the fastest around including the ill-handling Raptor.

I rather thought it was a triple 660cc???
Anyway, it doesn't do much on a sled...except raise the price and make you want to step down and push the sled to help it go faster.

jack
comparing a ds650 and a sp700 is apples and oranges. i dont think the the ds650 can go though all the mud or snow that the sp700 can. i dont think the ds650 has the ride or pulling capacity of the sp700.
i think a more fair comparison would be to the kawie650.

so if this thing has EFI does that mean that u could improve performance just buy changing the "chip".

The stock DS is not any faster than the Raptor. They are very close in almost any performance category. "And JUST in case you didn't know" The all-new Polaris Sport Model is NOT a Scrambler with new plastic....Ride'em hard Polcat

48 hp out of a 4 stroke sled engine! It will be a sad day if they switch all sleds to 4 strokes motors if these are the numbers to expect.People should buy all the 2 stroke sled they can and store them away someplace for the far future.

polcat,

is it true that the new "flagship" will have this engine in it?? i really hope so, i would love the EFI. just hope it also has the viscoLoc.

i agree that 48hp isnt much for a sled, but its because of the tree huggers.

48hp would be really nice in a sportsman

Jack. The sled being tested by the national parks and forest service is NOT a polaris, it's an Arctic Cat. Suzuki built, 660cc 4-stroke efi triple @ 45 HP. It came out late 00 and a limited production of 100 units were made. 50 of the units were slated for the parks and forest service and the balance, for sale to the public.

If you ask me, they should have made a twin so that it would be adaptable to their quad line-up.

Besides my Xplorer, I also own an Arctic Cat 580 efi Pantera. The engine in this is fairly small by todays standards @ 96hp=95 mph. Mabey The Pantera 1000 would be a little more appropriate @ 172hp.
I do agree with you that it will be a very, very sad day for snowmobilers, unless they can start cranking out some serious hp's from those 4-strokes.
