I have a 2009 550 XP with EPS. On one trip the steering got very hard to turn.like a ratvheting feel. Also on at least 3 occasions the hot light came on (the light on the left side of the instrument cluster) only after 5 minmutes of riding in cold weather. The check engine light came on a couple of times too. Sometrimes the steering wil get hard to turn when sitting stil n a slick concrete floor. Sometimes the electric motor will make loud noises when you turn the key on and not crank the machine. I took it to 2 dealers and it did not store the trouble codes. One dealer told me that the harsh steering was normal..even after I got the technician to test 2 floor models. The floor models turned very easy...go figure. At least the dealer started a "claim" with Polaris before the warranty expired so hopefuly if...no probably when the steering "quits" Polaris will make good on the claim. The problem is sporradic and I understand that it is hard to duplicate, but I can't be the onlky one that has experienced this problem. My dealer has contacted the on-line support for dealers and their response is that they have naver heard of this problem. Time will tell. Good luck..

Couple things to check...check the battery voltage and your battery connections. They EPS uses a good bit of current...if it isn't getting enough,it will ratchet and act weird.
Had the same problem with the PS on my Can-Am when I first brought it home the PS would intermittenly get hard to turn...come to find out one of the battery cables were never tightened when the battery was installed. Tighten the cable and not a hiccup since.

The batery cables were tight..but I took them off, cleaned them, put them back on. The battery is fully charged and is only aboput 3 months old. I also took the connector to the ecm off and cleaned them with electric motor cleaner and put di-lectric grease on the connections. I also cleaned the EPS conncections the same way. This made no difference. My EPS motor (with the key tiuned on) makes some strange noises (hard to describe it) and you can feel the unit vibrate. I was at a dealer in WIlmington, NC yesterday and turned the switch on on a unit they had on the floor...no strange noises or vibrations. I ahve also done this on other units at varoius dealerships and no strange noises or vibratioins from the EPS motor. I have even shown a technician the differences in my ubit and ones on their floor and the response was "probably normal." I am at my wits end with htis issue. NOne of the dealers I have takenn it to seem to think that there is a problem. If all of the other units did it that I have checked I would concede that there is no problem. Anyone have any ideas??? Thanks....

I live in Raleigh. My brother bought a used Can-Am 650 and it has needed a few things. I have been with him to the dealer in Goldsboro yopu are referering to. I was prety impressed with their willingness to help him with his Can-Am. I may take it to them and see what they say. The last dealer I took it to was D&J in Clayton. Pretty nice guys..but they didn't find anything wrone either. It isn't my imagination...it just seems no one (I mean Polarsi tech-line, or their reps) are willing, or have the knowledge to help their dealers out with "odd" problems. To be sure I am not the only one that has had this issue. I even told a dealer in Raleigh to contact the Polaris rep. and that I would pay for the EPS unit and install and if that fixed the problem then see what, if anyrhing Polaris would do. I gave my name and number to the dealer so he could pass it along to their Polaris rep...never heard a word...not surprised. Shortly after my purchase, I got the on-line survey about the machine, etc. In some of the questions it even asked if I woukd mind a Polaris representative call me...I left myy nimber in at least 3 replies and BEGGED them to call me. I am glad I didn't hold my breath. I love the way the machine rides, etc., but I have had a few other problems too. I am not bashing th emachine, just sharing my set of problems/issues.
Thanks.

If you get desperate enough to drive a couple hours I could look at it for you and go from there. I'm no rocket scientist, but I know my way around ATVs pretty well. If I look at it and think that it isn't right and call the owner at that dealer and explain it to him it will go a long way. Let me know if I can help.

Performance East would be the next dealer I would try. I am not opposed to driving a couple of hours for some assistance if you would. Sometimes an "outside eye" can shed some light that we do not think of..but the ideas/solutions that you and others have shared have met with negative results so far. You can e-mail me at srhodes3@nc.rr.com with your phone number and I will call you on my nickel if that is OK.
Thanks....
