Help fix synthetic cable
#1
My synthetic winch cable broke on me already and i need to fix it quick. Do any of you have some links or something to some good instructions with pics? Mine broke right on the end at the thimble so i need to replace all that. For now i am going to tie it up to make it work. Thanks for any suggestions and help.

You could try to tie it up like a hangmans noose and slip the thimble in to it before you tighten it up. Not sure if there is a way to repair synthetic with out sending in????

Sorry, but I am just a little curious on HOW you broke the syn rope? Everything I hear from everyone is that it is indestructable so to speak and I was leaning on replacing my wire rope since it now has a bad fray in it.

R synthetic rope is more suseptible to damage from abraision than steel in my experience. But with a little care to protect it from abraision it should last a long time.. If the rope was new,and it was true Amsteel and it broke then either it was overloaded, unlikely on an ATV unless you tied it off to a tree and tried to tear the machine in two,or more likely the rope was damaged severely leading it to fail.. If you pull the thimble tight against the fairlead in the wrong way,or have burrs on the fairlead,or let the rope drag against rocks ect..it can fray and thus weaken. Mine has an 5 ft abrasion guard sheath,I also use a winch saver so that in haste I don't pull the thimble into the fairlead and pinch the rope. If you must let the rope touch something when pulled tight and actually winching,ie due to the angle the rope is laying on the ground at a high point,or a rock,or downed tree, then you should try protect it where it is rubbing. Alot of guys will use old wool blankets or something similar between the rope and whatever it would be touching. The easiest thing is whenever possible find something to winch from that won't let the rop touch. I love the Amsteel, alot lighter to work with,no worry of getting wire in your hand ect...but like anything else there is a downfall.

ya i pulled the winch up to far plowing and it damaged the fairland. i think that it cut then with the sharpe edge it gave it. for not a knot is working fine i just use mine with the snow plow. if i could do it again i probably wouldn't worry about synthetic next time. it is nicer but not if it is going to break all the time.

For what it's worth, I learned quite quickly years ago that when you raise a plow you don't raise the blade all the way and bottom-out the winch. It crimps, frays, and breaks the cable quickly! LOL!
Lifting a blade 6-7" is more than enough. No need to to raise it any higher imo.
