Usually it's wide tires with paddle type tread in order to float. If you want to dig to the dirt, then a XTR. MST, mudlite, type tire works well. To float, you want bighorns, mudbugs, zillas, etc... The good part about the tires with paddles or bar type tread is that they have similar traction forward or reverse.
For the ultimate in snow, the tracks cannot be beat, but if it's not enough snow, I can see how they would be boring.

Tires with metal studs are available. Can remember if it was ITP or Maxxis.

I'm running 27" ITP 589's on my 850. I put 162 carbide ice racing screws in each rear tire and 80 screws in each front tire - 484 in total (come in a box of 500). Works very well in fairly deep snow and works absolutely awesome on icy trails - you can rail through corners like it's dry dirt.

For the most part, I don't think that tractions is as big of a problem in deep snow as flotation (staying on top) so that you don't get hung up on the frame.
This is why I am following many threads about tires for winter use and so far from what I've seen it seems to be between the Zillas or the Bighorns for flotation.
