Default Battery charges up to 18volts when running

Hi,
I have a 2007 Sportsman 500 EFI with a new battery and when the bike is running the meter says its charging up to 18v when it should be charging at around 14v. (I tried different meters) I tried a new control module and that doesn't fix the problem. When plowing the bike will just die even after a good low amp charge. Any ideas out there.
Thanks,

sounds like you got a short somewhere check your winch wires make sure nothing is pinched and the insulation hasn't been peeled away somewhere

welcome to the forum. if it's pushing 18 volts stop running it to you get it straighten out or more damage can happen. sounds like the recifier is bad which controls the amount of voltage that the bike puts out. in 06 they had a recall on the ecm's which were bad and does control the voltage as well(kinda of built together). not sure if 07 was part of the recall or not but a dealer could run the vin# and check.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I disconnected the winch to see if that had any effect but no luck. As far as the ECM goes, 2007 was not part of the recall but I plugged in a new one just to see what if that was the problem and that did not solve the issue either. Keep the ideas coming.
