Default What is broke?

Anyone want to guess what broke in my front gear case? I didn't even know anything was wrong untill I buried it in a snow drift this weekend and found out my left front didn't have power going to it. Surprised to find out that I only have 3 wheel drive. Must have been this way when I bought it used. Looks like I will be tearing into it this week, if I have a chance. I am wondering what to look for, as I haven't tore into one before.

I haven't even looked at the service manual yet to see how big of a job it's going to be.

No, it's on the 850. Just wondering if anyone would know, what the weak link might be.

Probably the roller cage. If it is, it's not a cheap fix. It could also be armature plate.

However, the first thing to try is to change out the fluid, and put the EXACT amount back in. If that works, you got away lucky... this time.

Dave, Would the roller cage or the armature plate allow the right side wheel to work and not the left? I'm wondering if it could be an axle spline or something like that on the left side.

Yes to your first question.

Possibly an axle spline, but not likely.

I would try changing out the fluid first... it's worth a try. Those diffs are finicky, and sometimes for no apparent reason... fragile.

Good Luck.

I would look at left axle, maybe, c-v- joint, that should be making some noise if its broke.

Thanks, A fluid change it will be.

I bought this machine as a wreck, It was the left front wheel or lower A frame that looked like it took the hit. Had to replace both A frames and outer joint. I didn't take the inner boot off to check the inside joint as it appeared to be fine. That joint will now get looked at after the oil change, and before tearing the frt gear case apart.

No noise, so I really don't suspect the inner joint, but it will get checked now anyway.

Hoping the oil change will do it, but given the hit to that side I don't think I will be that lucky

Thanks bill

Default gearcase

I would check your left inner cv joint first.Usally if one axle on this style gear case locks they will both be locked. The way the centrillized hillard clutch works inside your front gear case its unlikely that it would not lock both axles at the same time.unless you have a broken cage inside the front gear case then usally they stay locked in 4x4 or wont lock at all.Make sure you use the right fluid in your front gear case also.gear cases with ADC take demand drive Lt or demand drive plus fluid.
