You are right on, only it wasn't the innner, it was the outer one I installed. I just got a chance to check it and I found it was all my stupid mistake. Didn't take anything apart yet, just jacked it up and checked by turning the wheel to see what was wrong.

When I put it together I somehow missed getting the splined shaft into the hole. I don't know how I did that because I thought I had it in there and snapped in place. It must have not been snapped in, and in the process of fooling around putting it all together it must have come out and the boot was the only thing holding things together.

Very dumb on my part, I can't believe I didn't hear any noise from it. The good thing is I didn't run it much, and didn't run in 4x4 untill I got stuck so I'm hoping when I get the thing apart it will still be OK, and I can just assemble it correctly this time. Man, I am mad at myself.

hopely it will be a cheap easy fix for you then. If it doesnt go together fairly easy take a file and clean the splines on the axle shaft there may be a bur on the the splines and make sure you have a good lock ring on the axle shaft.
