Default Snow Plow Weight

Well I did a search and went through a lot of the threads and didnt see anything like this so here we go. Like many others I have had problems with the ATV plow being too light and floating too much. I looked into the prices for weight bars and such but couldnt justify spending the money. So I found a piece of 1" round stock laying in the shed and some weights that never seem to get used anymore out of the basement. I got out the welder and taadaa my own little adjustable weight system. It works wonders and gets the blade right down to the surface. I just need to get some stronger springs now because she folds a little to easy. It looks a little goofy but I can easily add or remove weight as necessary for the job/surface. Sorry about the quality of the pics.

I ran a quick bead of weld around the bar to keep the weights off the blade on the left side in this pic but then ran out of wire when i went to do the right side. Thats why the weights on left look like they are sitting crooked.

The bars run all the way down to pivot point on the blade.

Good Idea, I don't really have much trouble with weight, but if I did I would have built some sort of weight system

Good thinking! I'm going to probably add a sand bag or something on my plow frame. Got plenty of space to add weight with the extension for the tracks. That or i might fab my own downforce kit from some tonneau cover struts I have laying around.

I thought about making a down force kit using hood/liftgate struts. But I would have had to buy those and this worked out well. I also found that the bars sticking up work good to grab ahold of to fold the plow down and then release it to shake off packed snow.

Another good idea! We had a lot of wet, sticky crap this year and had to do that a lot.

you could always add another spring to the plow to help w/ the tripping. the heavier a plow set up the more spring force it takes to hold it back just like on a regular plow. you also may try to tighten th eye bolts for more tension onthe springs itself.

Well it works great for getting right down to the surface when going forward. For back dragging it works a little better but still doesnt pull clean. I dont think the angle of the plow is quite right for back dragging.
