Default 01 Xplorer 400 Running bad

Hello all I am having some issues with my Xplorer and I know there is some knowledgeable guys on here and It would be great if I could get some help with this thing.

The problem is I was riding in some deep snow and I my overheating light came on so I shut it down then turned the key back on and the fan wasnt working. So after 30 minutes or so I started it back up and headed out on the lake it was staying plenty cool because it was -10 outside and there was plenty of airflow going to the radiator. But then 45 minutes later It almost smelt like something was burning then 20 min later it started sputtering and backfiring and wouldnt rev up.

After getting back home I pulled the carb off and it still looked brand new inside I am not a carb expert by any means but it still looked really good without any varnish. So I put the carb back on and same problem it started right up at first and ran well for 5-10 seconds or so now it wont start at all.

I should also mention right before I started having all these problems the starter was/is having some issues it will work great somedays then others it will just click. I am not sure if this could somehow be related?

Again thanks in advance for any help guys.

Not sure on the running but, the fan is controled by a temp switch screwed in the radiator. Ive got a 95 and had to get a new switch one time.

Do you see check there level coolant?
Do you see check there level balance oil?
Do you see check test recoil if very weak need rebuild as possible.
Do you see check there coil box, stator, wire, switch fans wire possible fall down head sensor temp?
Do you see check piston burn?
Do you see check spark plug?
Do you need get new one fans or not possible if ever works.

did you check to make sure the fan wasn't blocked or froze in place by trying to move the fan blades(w/ the bike off i mean). if you ran this bike awhile w/ it overheated you could cause engine damage to the head or gasket? first thing is to see why it overheated lie mentioned above on things to check why the fan wasn't coming on. imo

Was finally able to work on it some more today. Found some wires going into the crankcase that had been melted. I replaced the bad sections of wires and it runs like new. However the fan is still not working. If I put 12 volts straight to it it makes some noises but will not spin nice and free like it should. Ones from polaris are about $200 it looks like. Anybody have any aftermarket options?

Thanks

Go to the "Spal" website...they make the fan and are MUCH cheaper than Polaris!

I ended up just getting a universal electric fan from the parts store although it was a 10" I made it work I just had to drill 4 holes to attach it to the fan shroud. Took it out today for the first time since December and it works great.
