Default 07 500 EFI Top end

Hi- I have a 07 500 EFI sportsman that is burning some oil. I have also lost some performance on it. So- I am gonna start with new piston and rings. What do you recommend? Should I go with oem replacement or do you have aftermarket you have had good results with. Also, I would like to get more performance out of this machine. Does it make that much of a difference boring it .10 or .20 over?

Thanks a bunch!!!

I dont want to spend a ton. Really want to just get it back to not using any oil and maybe boost the performance a bit.

Wiseco makes a piston that will raise copmpression from 10.4to1 to11to1 makes a diff, first you need to tear it down and have cylinder miced to see how much it needs bored, then buy the correct size piston and have it bored to it, I would buy the Wiseco.

what are your thoughts to just a new set of rings? This quad only has 1400 miles on it. Not sure why its already smoking and burning oil. Would I be ok with just a set of rings or should I do the piston also?

If the piston is good why change it, I still do not get the rings being bad after only 1400 miles. There are 500s running around with 9000 miles on them.

Like mention a new piston can raise your Compession ratio.

The most common reason for the 500 to prematurely wear out is the person does not use Full synthetic 0w-40 oil because he has a wack of 10w-30 lying around his garage.

I agree. I dont understand how the rings would be bad. I am a amateur mechanic but all signs lead to rings to me.
1. Engine smokes (especially when first started up)
2. Uses oil. (quite a bit)
3. No noticable leaks
4. loss of performance (not as much response when I punch it)

If you have any other ideas what it could be I would love to hear them.

Thanks!!
