Default Frustrated with 2008 Sportsman 500 HO

Hello,

I am having issues with my 08 500 HO and was wondering if anyone could provide insight as to what is happeneing. I am the orginal orwner of the machine and maintain it regularly. Recently, it was not running well and I took it to the dealership and they adjusted my throttle and changed the fuel pump (which was not working correctly), they changed a spark pug that was bad due to the throttle issue, and removed and completey cleaned the carborator. That said, the machine runs well. The day I got it back, I took it out and everytime the machine either went up a small hill or was on a slight incline, the power would turn off. Afterwards, I was able to easily put the machine in parkl and neutral and turn the key and it would start up again right away. After the 6 or 7th time of this happening..it started to get annoying. I really don't live close to my dealership and don;t weant to bring it back unless needed. Are there any recommendations for a quick fix to this? Any advice or help woul dbe appreciated. Thanks.

AN HO has a carb and it sounds like you may have dirt in the bowl. When you hit an incline the dirt moves around the bowl and gets sucked up into the main jet. Pretty common and not a hugh deal..I would remove the carb, take the bowl off and make certain their is not any dirt in in. Spray the needle and jets with carb cleaner, of simply take a corse paint brush, dip it in gas and brush the jets lightly.

I'm thinking that maybe the adjustment for the needle valve/float got tweaked a little during the cleaning and the bowl is not filling high enough. Not sure what how to check that adjustment.

welcome to the forum. agreed it sounds like maybe it was running out of gas up the hills from the float not being set right. but if i had justed paided to have this issue worked on and a new fuel pump installed, i would called them and tell them what is going on as they may be at fualt by not adjusting the float or something. imo

Well, looks like it's going back to the dealership...again. A warrenty is a riders best friend sometimes. :-) Thank you all for your advice. I will post a follow-up once the machine is working properly again. Thanks again!

Tell them you want to see it idle for 5 mins while parked on there 45 degree loading ramp before you take it home.

So, here is a follow up. The dealership told me to check connections on the battery and where my winch is plugged in....which I did. Took it out the other night and everything seemed to be going well and suddendly....BOOM...machine backfires like a shotgun and dies in the middle of nowhere (this is one of the reasons why you should never ride alone BTW). Luckily, I had a friend to help me back to civilization. Took the machine back to the dealership the next day and tore them a new one. Apparently, my spark plugs are melting due to overheating in the exhauist system. They are currently replacing every part that might have caused this issue or may cause a potential problem in the future (from the flywheel to the fuse box). We'll see what comes of this...god I love warrenties.
