My battery is dead and I once heard that with a dead battery the 4x4 will not engage. Is this true? Can these puny batteries be recharged succesfully with a trickle-charger?

Thanks,

Brian

I've charged mine numerous time and it does just fine after all it is a 12volt. I'm not sure about the 4X4 engagement thing or not though.

This is true. Mechanic at the dealer said if the battery is dead, it can cause only one of the wheels in front to engage or none of them to engage. Trickle charge should do it.

Xplor, The battery in "99" SP500 went dead back last fall. Not only does the 4wd not work, but the speedometer will not work, and the lights want work. It crank pulling the rope a lot eaiser than I thought it would.

Check the water in the battery then charge for 24 hours..If it holds a charge ride on...if not purchase a batter from Interstate Batteries. Their batteries are very fresh and last longer than most.

4WD will not work with a dead battery. If the battery is DEAD dead, you also run the risk of burning out your light bulbs. Be sure the battery has water, trickle charge it for a day or two, and if it is still dead, get a new one before it goofs something else up. On some models, it even disables the rev limiter. Caused the driver to tip over as he was expecting it to only go 3 MPH backwards instead of 10 or 15.

This may be a stupid question . . . do you have to remove the battery to charge it? My negative terminal just will not come off. I can't back off the bolt. I have not tried WD40 yet though.

I have charged my batt several times when connected with no problems. In fact, I have an onboard charger which I simply plug an extention cord to, which charges the batt @1.5 amps/hr.

No harm at all if you don't have the switch on. I don't think it would hurt anything even then if it was a trickle charger.

I removed my battery from my TBlazer this winter and run it off the pull-start, and the reverse over-ride didn't work. (Not that I'm complaining). The only thing I didn't like about it was the lights didn't work at idle.
