Broken Bleeder
#1
Broke off the bleed on the rear caliper of a 98 400 xplorer... How do you guys feel about a drill and tap? That is so long as the shavings get cleaned out? Aside from another caliper have any options?

You can try using an extractor but be careful. If it doesn't start backing out you'll have to go with drill/tap method. Had the smaller extractors break when using on bolts because they can't handle too much.

I also broke the bleeder on the rear caliper of my '97 Trail Boss. This is what I did, NOTHING!!! When it broke I had already completed bleeding the line. It is tight enough so that it doesn't leak and broke off clean enough to prevent vise grips or other methods of easily backing it out. Since it broke all brakes on this machine have been working great, including the foot brake that I adjusted : ) I fully expect to go years without having to worry about the broken bleeder.

Find a nut just a bit larger than the bleeder valve, place it over it, tack weld the nut to the broken bleeder (works best with a mig welder, and turn it out. This does 2 things, it gives you something to turn it out with, and also heats it up just enough to swell the metal to break the rust free. I do this all of the time for friends and such. Just did an exahust manifold bolt in an aluminum head, and also a tiny screw in a disrubutor in the last week.
