If a Magnum 500 with the standard rear spring possesses a ride which is a little to firm, would the installation of heavier tires smooth out the ride?

Would an increase in unsprung weight (read heavier tires and rims) have a tendancy to reduce the current "rebound" characteristics of the standard suspension?
