Default Does no speedo mean?

I recently bought a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 400. When I took it for a test drive, I noted the Speedo didn't work. Called friend of mine (owns Yamahas) that said the speedo wasn't a big deal and not to worry about it. SO....I get home and start reading these posts about the speedo being connected the AWD.

The backlight works and all the digital icons and numbers work....if the AWD icon works is the AWD fine? I know next to nothing about ATV's, so basic english is needed to understand what you guys are saying.... The person I bought it from said the speedo worked fine a couple of months ago.

I know she had some issue with battery voltage in Feb and had it fixed at a shop....

Where do I find fuses to check?

Thanks in advance for helping a lady out!

yes the awd does go through the speedo to make it work. it would be pretty easy to tell if it didn't by putting in awd and pushing the over ride in reverse and try to spin the tires while backing up. if the rear tires spin only then the awd does not work. you might just have a bad wheel sensor that is making the speedo not read the speed and thats all thats wrong w/ it or it might just be dirty(sensor) or a broken wire.
