2001 Sportsman 500 overheating problem
#1
It seems my fan is not turning on like it normally does, which is causing the machine to overheat. After the machine idled for about 5 minutes, I checked the voltage going to the fan and it was 0. Is there a fan sensor or some type of temp relay I could check?

the coolant temp. sensor is on the right lower side of the radiator. you can take the hood off and unplug the sensor wires going to the fan and using a jumper wire, plug into those wires going to the fan and with the key in the on position ,the fan should kick on.
First, you should make sure the radiator fins are clean and clear of mud and goo from top to bottom, five minutes running-riding time isn't very long for a water-cooled machine to get hot.
Second ,make sure it's full of coolant, sometimes those resevoirs lie and the radiator could be actually low.

yea, it's most likely the coolant temp sensor in the radiator... well known maint problem with that year SP500. Search this forum and you'll find a lot of info including where to buy the sensor, and how to buy a new SPAL fan direct (for 1/2 the price from Polaris).
