It does require special tools to get it apart, sounds like the secondary is not set right, the holes depend on your elevation, theclutch needs to be tensioned 1/3 of a turn, line up the splines, they will only go one way, then turn the helix one third of a turn, push it down and hold it then get the snap ring, this is alot easier with 2 people, kinda a bitch without help, the helix has 3 ears on it this is how you judge the 1/3 turnWhat elevation do you live at and Ill see what the book says for settings, I live at 500 ft and set the spring at 2 on the shiv and 1 on the helix.

LOL, I have never been asked what elevation I live in. I had to look it up. Waterford is 790 feet.

When I put it together I used 2 and 2, had them lined up, turned it a little more than 1/3, clamped it with vice grips, then slid the helix down and put in the snap ring.

How precise does the 1/3 turn have to be (and it is counter clockwise right?)?

Thanks for checking for me, I am curious to see what it says it should be.

KBB is checking your elevation in relation to clutch set up-Sea Level. Haven't had my Scramblers in a few years, but that 1/3 turn CC is to line up the Helix to spline. I believe there to be like 2 splines mated that the Helix slides into, the rest are single splines. Make sure you use some scotch bright on the sheaves, buff them up a bit. Sounds like your spring is good, ends line up, and you have proper bushings behind secondary-driven clutch. Your secondary spring Red or an aftermarket set up?

If the helix wasn't lined up would it slide down for the snap ring to go on? It is also the amount of pre-load right?

It has the red spring. Is that the factory spring?

Well, it has been ahwile. Frankly I had given up on the machine, but my son really wants me to go out with him so I am back into it.

I took the clutch cover off and rode it around to see if I could tell what was happening. Sometimes it never gets above a crawl and the belt stays low on the primary and high on the secondary. Periodically the machine takes off and the belt rises on the primary and drops on the secondary as it should.

What is making it not want to work properly all the time? Any thoughts? Suggestions so far have focused on the secondary, but if the primary is sticking could that cause my problem?

Thanks for the help!

I just tried 3 different pre-load tensions on the secondary and saw no difference. I did about 1/2, 1/3 turn, 1/4 turn. I am not sure how the secondary is supposed to behave. How can I tell if it is working right? It seems to not move freely.

Take a look at your clutch weights for wear(drive) may have notches worn from rollers causing clutch too hang up.

I am not familiar with the primary clutch. Do I need to take it off to see the weights?
