I have a 00'Grizzly and a 01'H.O. I have raced them and this is how they did. The Sportsman got the jump by about 2 quad lingths, but it didnt take long at all 4 the Grizzly to pass me. Then I slowly began to pass him. When I came by him I started waving bye, bye. I believe the H.O has more power off start, and the top end. The Grizzly is unbeatable at midrange. As far as overall raw power it seems like the Grizzly has more. On everything else the Grizzly gets whipped!

the grizz is 30-31hp, the HO is 38hp.

the griz cant get all the power out of its engine because its air cooled.

just because it is air cooled does not mean it would have any less power. it just means that it will more than likely run hotter and lose power as it is driven over longer periods of time.

I have ridden with a 99 Sportsman once. When we raced, I killed him. Off the line, top speed, everything. I have never ridden with an HO. I have ridden on an HO for a short time, and found it to have some pretty respectable power. I can't say if it is faster or not, but it didn't "feel" as strong as my Grizzly. At least not off the bottom anyway. The thing sure rode really nice though.

Put a set of 28" outlaws, and a locker front end on that grizz take it to the mud holes. Then you will enjoy all that torque and not care who wins in a drag race.My son has 00 Grizz with all the after market goodies and I have 01 H.O.(stock everything)I can out run him in a drag race but in the big mud holes he makes me look bad.

Packrat,

It sounds like it is time for you to accessorize your machine. You can't have your son makin' you look bad, can you?

packrat,
I have a set of 27" Titan 589's, and I've been very happy with them. As a matter of fact, I got an e-mail confirmation yesterday that my Dirty Howie locker is in the mail!

From personal experience. Its pretty close on take off, but once you hit around 30mph its bye bye Grizz.(this is with both machines stock)
