The opening in the housing that the axle spline goes into is open through to the other side. If necessary, you can see if the other side comes out easier and then drive the stuck one out from that side. As noted above, you're having to compress a circlip into the groove at the end of the splined shaft. There's probably rust and debris causing it to resist your efforts.
