Is this a good trade?
#1
Hello all,
I am new to this forum. I just recently got interested in ATV's when my friend gave me an 86 Kawasaki Bayou which I rebuilt.
This led me to want a second one. So, I started searching and found this guy who wants to trade his 96 Polaris Big Boss 4x4.
Apparently it was a 6x6 but was converted into a 4 x 4. Is that a normal practice to do, or is that going to significantly reduce mechanical soundness, etc?
It is a 96 and he says it runs well minus the carb needing some tweeking. It comes with a snow plow and a winch.
MY trade is a firearm that sells for $948 new, and has some extras with it in perfect condition.
What do you all think? I don't know much about atv's but these big boss polaris are quite expensive and nice atv's. Would I be making a good trade??
Thank you in advance.

Making a 6x6 into a 4x4 sounds like its be monkeyed around with to much for me, If I jumbed on it and every thing ran great maybe because hes not asking much but he also says it needs a carb tuning.
Tell him to get the carb bugs out of it not you, than make a offer.

Just me, but if I were to be trading one of my guns that was in almost perfect condition, whatever I'm trading it for better be in as good or better shape.
For about 1k, around here you could find a newer, not as tinkered with machine.

I just purchased 03 Sportsman 700 that was neglected by a farmer and thought how much work could it really need. It ran good and the brakes worked. I think the only thing that was done was the starter was replaced. Paid $2500 for and will end up spending another $1500 on it just to get back to good condition. Lesson here parts are real expensive. I know a Speedometer wheel sensor alone is $125.00 alone and I could go on and on. I personally would not do it. Check Craigslist in you local area to find a Big ATV. If you call them, they usually will come off the price.

Never deal from a dealership, My Canadian Polaris dealer wanted $320 for a rad fan, I found the same new fan on ebay for $65.

Okay, so I talked to the guy via email some more. He said that winch and plow work great, and that it was converted simply by "unbolting" the back 2 wheels.
You think i should go up there and check it out, ride it, etc? It seems like I would be maing a pretty good trade.

Maybe just me, but why would you want such a thing? I can understand if you wanted the 6x6. Removing the rear most axle now means all that *** end(if still there) is dangling. Wide turning radius and not going to do all that well off road. Would it not be better just to find a true 4x4 quad?
