Default What's with the odd muffler design?

Hey guys, I was just wondering what the reasoning was on the way exhaust comes out of the muffler on my 06 sportsman, it's got the little pipe that comes out of the bottom and curves back to horizontal. Is it to keep water out?

if u put a brush guard on ur quad, if it was straight out it would blow all the exhaust onto it and mess up the paint, just keeps the gasses away from the machine

The exhaust is designed that way to be a hydrostatic trap. So if you stall while the exhaust is under water, the water cannot go down the exhaust and into the motor. Its actually a really good design. One thing Polaris is good for is making its quads water tight.

Ok that's what I was thinking.
