When I bought my 800 I asked the salesman why they discontinued the 700 and he answer was they needed one "big dog" and if they had the 700 it would be too close to an 800 and they would have a hard time selling 800's for the price they were asking. So if this holds true I would say they won't have a 900 but possibly a 1000. If they do make a 900 I would expect to see the 850 and possibly even the 800 discontinued.

I do like the current 800, 850 engines. They pack a lot of power and grunt.

They will probably jump a few cc's or get the horses from somewhere else. I don't see the big bore race ending. Jagged x is spinning 31" wheels with the 850 engine at the moment to get that atv floating over mud.
It will probably end with an engine in an atv that will scare the cr&p out of an average rider

I do however like my old 2-stroke 400 mill. Nice powerband and a very light machine, like riding a bicycle compared to these modern day tanks. They need eps because they otherwise tend to tire you out on the trail.

The 850 already makes as much as hp as the 800 renegade, Polaris has a smaller 750cc Weber built 4 stroke twin sled/PWC motor that makes 90hp stock and 145 with turbo assist if more power was a issue to them.

They don't need bigger displacement if Polaris wanted the quickest ATV out there.

Doing 100 mph+ on a sled is much safer than on a ATV and Polaris and there Lawyers know it.

Here is a Video of someone trying to put a 750 in a Polaris side by side RZR. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34-S5EVKzFI

That and weight is becoming an issue. A lot of states have width/weight restrictions because of the "supposed" negative impact bigger/heavier machines have on the environment/trails. Probably why I have yet to see a RZR-S on a trail here and same will go for the commanders. Chances are for safety/legal reasons an atv with 900-1000cc's would have to be wider than 50" and it was a battle to get that upped from the old standard of 48" in MN/WI.

The Weber with turbo on the PWC "MSX 140" is a great little engine and turbo combo. It could easily compare to the 3 cilinder rotax engines in the seadoo's.
Out of the water without backpressure the engine just shoots up to 8000 rpm when starting here up.
In the water you need all the weight you can get to keep your nose level and response is quite SCARY

They still have a few tricks up their sleeve with the parallel twin.

The 750 has a base rating of 80hp without a turbo in this Polaris Turbo Switchback
snowmoble review 2009 Polaris Turbo Switchback Review that still more than the 850 or 800 Can- AM.

The turbocharger pulls 60 more horsepower out of the rather modest base liquid-cooled, 750cc four-stroke twin cylinder engine. Polaris uses the 80-hp non-turbo engine in its touring and utility-oriented models
Polaris ,Yamaha,Ski-doo (Can-AM) and Arctic Cat all have crazy powerful sled motors already but they chose not to but them in there ATVs on purpose.

Arctic Cat's 1000cc Sleds make 145hp while there 1000cc ATV makes only 65hp. There are holding back for a reason.

I also think the other question to be asked, is how long are they going to keep the 500 and 800 around ,now that they have the 550 and 850?

I think it's a pretty good bet the 500 and 800's days are numbered. With the changes they made to the new ones like removing the front cargo box and making adc an option it's as if they are making them less desirable to push the 550/850's. Be interesting to see how it all plays out.
